Many Teens living through the 1960’s were richly benefitted by those adults who gave of their time, talent and even some of their treasure, investing in programs & activities that could provide hope, offer purpose and create a vision for the future of youth in their charge.
In addition to, of course, parents, themselves examples of The Greatest Generation, Baby Boomers had coaches, scout leaders, teachers and patient part-time employers.
But for many adult Boomers looking back, it was a Youth Worker who took his or her teen groups out of the church basement & the Sunday 9am hour and into weeknight homes, sports courts and mountain lodges. And while the message didn’t change, their methods took Bible stories off of flannel graphs & out of terry cloth bath robes skits, to circles  around campfires, living rooms and soda shops.
In the process, faith became real and hope became possible.
In Episode 219 TPC interviews a veritable veteran of youth work in the 60’s, the Mad Scot, Derek Wallace.
Over the years he impacted hundreds of kids in his role as Youth Minister at E 49th St Christian Church, (later E 91st St) & Urban Director of Indianapolis Young Life.
He shares about both and why he served in each, and if if you don’t know Derek, maybe you’ll understand thAT special influencer in YOUR life, just a little better if you had one. Maybe, just maybe, it might prompt you to pass it on.
Enjoy!!
